- AmEx Blue Cash Preferred is a great card to carry for specific spending
- Always good for groceries, streaming services now earn enhanced cash back
- Also helps with transit: ride sharing, subways, parking, etc
The American Express Blue Cash Preferred card has been in my wallet for a while, due entirely to their 6% cash back on groceries. That was literally all I used it for, which was reason enough to carry it.
No other card I’ve seen comes close in that category. If you’ve looked over my thinking on grocery savings – spoiler: more trouble than it’s worth – you know it’s liable to stay for that reason alone. Even with a $95 annual fee.
Now there’s another reason, and it’s a biggie: AmEx has added that same 6% return for just about every popular streaming service. Since I cut the cord last year – and I’m not alone – they’re making a strong play for more spending.
The AmEx Blue Cash Preferred list of streamers, grocers, retailers, gas stations, and other categories is here. The highlights for me are the big guys, including Netflix, Spotify, Hulu, Apple, HBO, and many others.
They also threw in 6% back for “transit,” which includes Uber and Lyft. I’ll take it.
And the kicker on streaming cash back: there’s no cap on spending, so won’t interfere with the $7000 annual limit for grocery spending at the 6% level.
These guys are serious.
